About
Darilís García, PhD
I was born en la isla del encato, “the island of enchantment,” Puerto Rico. Island living was amazing, with great weather and the best culture, if I may say so myself. I grew up with laughter, music, good food, and boisterous conversations, aka we are loud. I never thought I would leave the island until my parents announced we were moving to Michigan.
I thought if my parents, two brothers, and I moved anywhere it would be to New York like good Puerto Ricans, not Michigan. Michigan was a culture shock at first, people did not look like me, I had to learn a new language, and… snow! I am here to tell you, nothing prepares you emotionally for the first winter after moving from a warm climate. I grew to love Michigan, not the snow, but everything else. I did my undergrad at the University of Michigan, Go Blue! While at Michigan I co-founded my beloved sorority, Delta Tau Lambda, Sorority, Inc., and forged friendships that have enriched my life. After undergrad, I got married (spoiler alert, it didn’t last) and eventually move to El Paso, Texas.
I did not care for desert life. I am here to tell you, nothing prepares you for a sand storm; you can literally taste the dirt in your mouth. While desert life was not for me the people in El Paso were amazing. After three years in Texas, I ended up in Oregon. A lot has happened in my time in Oregon, I adopted my beautiful daughter, completed my PhD, divorced, regrouped after my divorce, and now… I started a blog. Let’s see where this journey of words and pictures takes us, shall we?
