Phenomenal by Nature
Twenty-seven years ago I made one of the best decisions of my life, I founded Delta Tau Lambda Sorority, Inc. alongside my phenomenal co-founder, Maria “Vicky” Ramos at the University of Michigan. We had talked about it the year prior but it was on April 2, 1994, that we forged full-steam ahead into our brown and gold future.
We had picked a few different names for our sorority but Delta Tau Lambda was our first choice. The internet was not what it is today back in 1994 so I called our Office of Greek Life and did my best to ensure there weren’t other organizations with that name. I called on a landline because cellphones were not what they are today either. 😉
Over the summer, Vicky and I worked to finalize our colors, crest, purpose, flower, symbols, and other pertinent foundational pillars in order to be ready to make our grand debut at the University of Michigan that fall. Reminiscing about those days bring a smile to my face; we were lucky to have each other. We laughed a lot, worked hard, and did not waiver from our vision.
I grew up with two brothers, that I love, however, I wanted a sister. I did ask about having a sister and my mom did not go for it. 🙂 Today, I am blessed beyond measure to have hundreds of sisters. They have been everything I could have wanted and more. Some of them have been there for the good times and bad. They have lifted me up when I needed it and held me all the way down. They have celebrated my wins as their own. They have given me good advice but have also gotten indignant when I needed them to. I remember thinking of my sisters when it was only Vicky and me. I did not see their faces, but in my mind’s eye, I always saw them. Meeting them and getting to know them has been one of the greatest pleasures in my life. I even get to call my niece my sister and hopefully in a few years, I will do the same with my daughter.
The words on this post will never do justice to how I feel about my sisters… what they have brought to my life and how grateful I am for making Vicky’s and my dream come true is beyond beautiful. They make the organization what it is and all that it will be because the letters don’t make them, they make the letters. Twenty-seven years later, I am as proud and filled with hope today as I was when it was just two of us. I can’t wait to see what the next 27 years will bring. Whatever it is, I know it will be phenomenal because that is what we do best!!
